Dulce o travesura
Trick or treat - I'm pretty sure you know this phrase quite well. But what you may not know is our Mexican friends are pretty familiar with it to. Or at least the Spanish version: Dulce o travesura.
I was really surprised when my amigos told me that Halloween is celebrated in Mexico too. It's called Día de los brujas, but it's very common to hear it called Halloween also. It's celebrated on Oct 31, followed by Día de Todos los Santos on Nov 1, and Día de los Muertos on Nov 2.
Of course, Halloween is no fun without a scary disfraz (costume) to espantar (scare) all the little kids. And don't forget to visit a haunted house, casa embrujada or casa de espantos.
Maldosos are those mischievous folks who like to play travesuras (pranks) on people who don't like to hand out candy, but this term isn't just limited to Halloween pranksters.
This post is by no means a comprehensive list of Halloween terms and customs in Mexcio and around the world , but now you at least have a few terms you can use to chew the fat with your Spanish speaking amigos.
